Why “66 Days”
Soul is left with sixty-six days to live after the wound at the start of the story. That countdown runs through the whole game, and the challenge mode turns it into a life counter.OfficialOfficial More in Story & cast.
How hard is it, really?
- Push Square: “not an easy game on any of these settings”, but “not what I'd call brutal”. Parry and dodge windows are much more generous than in typical soulslikes, and tricky bosses took two or three tries.Press
- Checkpoints are plentiful, you lose no resources when you die, and defeated enemies don't respawn.Press
- S-GAME's stated aim: a game “as many people as possible” can enjoy, with an extra rush for those who want a challenge.Official
Difficulty and achievements
None of the 66 Steam achievements mention difficulty, so Wayfarer is fine for 100%.Official The True Ending requirements don't mention difficulty either. See Endings.
Difficulty FAQ
What difficulty should I pick in Phantom Blade Zero?
Pathbreaker is the standard experience. Pick Wayfarer if you mainly want the story and spectacle; Hellwalker if you are comfortable parrying, since guards break slowly without parries there.
Can you change difficulty in Phantom Blade Zero?
The three normal modes are available from the start. Push Square notes you can bump the difficulty up later, but no source we trust confirms both directions. 66 Days can only be chosen when starting a new game.
What is 66 Days mode?
A challenge mode unlocked by beating the game. Enemies seem to use Hellwalker-level stats and you get 66 lives; running out is a permanent game over.
Does difficulty affect achievements or the ending?
No Steam achievement mentions a difficulty, and no True Ending requirement depends on it.
Is Phantom Blade Zero hard?
Push Square calls it “not an easy game on any of these settings” but “not what I’d call brutal”, with easier parry timing than typical soulslikes, plentiful checkpoints and no resource loss on death.
