Phantom Blade Zero combat and beginner tips

Phantom Blade Zero's combat in plain words: what Sha-Chi is, how to read colour-coded attacks, when to parry or dodge, why weapon swapping is a defensive tool, and what to prioritise in your first hours.

You fight with two primary weapons and two Phantom Edges, spending Sha-Chi to block and on heavy attacks. Enemy attacks are colour-coded: some drain Sha-Chi when blocked, and some can't be blocked or parried at all. A perfectly timed parry or dodge triggers Ghoststep, which puts you behind the enemy.Press

Sha-Chi, the resource

  • Sha-Chi pays for blocking and for heavy Sha-Chi attacks.Press
  • Swapping primary weapons fully restores it, with a cooldown. Swapping is how you refill when you're about to run dry.Press
  • Sha-Chi Ambers raise the maximum permanently.Official See collectibles.

Reading attacks: block, parry, dodge

Normal attacksBlock or parry

Blocking costs Sha-Chi. A parry is the better answer when you have the timing.Press

Brutal movesParry them

Blocking them drains Sha-Chi heavily. A parry just before impact triggers Ghoststep.Press

Killer movesDodge them

They can't be blocked or parried. A dodge just before impact triggers Ghoststep.Press

Ghoststep moves Soul behind the enemy, setting up your punish. Each attack type has its own colour cue, so learn them in the first area and the rest of the game reads much more easily.Press

  • Chain Executions do the same in open combat (50%, “Way of the Blade”).Official
  • Weapons reach class-wide execution abilities at level 10. Fextralife names Phantom Execution and Shadow Execution as examples.Guide

First-hours priorities

  1. Use Jagged Steel's bleed. It's an early weapon, and KeenGamer singles it out for the early game.Guide
  2. Push on to Forge. Upgrades open about an hour in, at the Outpost Bell in Weeping Creek Valley.Press
  3. Buy healing first. KeenGamer's early skill picks are Boundless Capacity, Healing Art, Thousand-Mile Stride and Steady Composure.Guide
  4. Grab the Dread Axe. Axemaster Peng Meng's Phantom Edge staggers enemies when activated. More →
  5. Don't be proud about difficulty. Wayfarer makes enemies less aggressive and stance breaks easier.Guide Difficulty →

Combat FAQ

Is Phantom Blade Zero a soulslike?

It shares some ideas with the genre, such as demanding boss fights, healing that refills at Bells and material-based upgrades. But it is built around fast wuxia combos and has adjustable difficulty. S-GAME says it wants everyone who loves wuxia and action to be able to enjoy it.

Does Phantom Blade Zero have parry?

Yes. You can block, parry and dodge. Some enemy attacks can be blocked at a Sha-Chi cost, and the most dangerous ones cannot be blocked or parried at all.

Should I play Phantom Blade Zero with a controller or keyboard and mouse?

Steam tags it “Gamepad Recommended”, with full controller support including DualSense. PC also has keyboard rebinding, though a Steam discussion thread reports that the Phantom Edge key (Ctrl) can’t be unbound yet.

What is Sha-Chi in Phantom Blade Zero?

The combat resource spent on blocking and on heavy Sha-Chi attacks. Swapping primary weapons fully restores it, and Sha-Chi Ambers raise the maximum.
